Such small screens work extremely well for drafting because one really does not have to look at what has been written in order to continue, as long as there is a clear focus to the writing process. I generate a lot of non-fiction in the shape of analytic reports and briefing documents for my consulting clients in addition to my own private writing. I have, and do on a regular basis, write on a Samsung S7 Edge phone with a Bluetooth keyboard. I can write clean draft copy on what would be considered very small screens. Size: The screen size for composition or drafting can be radically different from what is needed for editing, layout, and graphics work. I've since tried some of the later MB's but none of the keyboards suit me. I currently use a MBPro 13" (mid 2014) which has a lovely keyboard. In any writing setup I personally consider the touch, feel, and quality of the keyboard as paramount. It's everything else that may require more screen real estate.Ĭlick to expand.There is a lot of personal preference to be gone through in answering this question but here are some of the things that I've come to think are important about screen size and MacBooks, although they also pertain to other types of laptops. Writing has the lowest screen requirements of anything. Will you be using Vellum for formatting? Designing covers on it? Making video trailers for your books? And so on. It's the stuff you plan to do other than writing that will have more impact on what screen size you go with. So, as far as writing goes, almost any decent sized screen will do. I like being able to see more text at a time than that. That was difficult to work with because of the four line screen. It saved files to floppy disk (in a format no computer can read) and had a four line screen. The most difficult machine for writing was an electronic typewriter I bought ages ago. Other than that, either of those machines would be fine for just writing.
(I'm not sure the measurements on it, but it's not a huge screen.) I'd probably use it but (a) it needs some preventative maintenance to prevent screen damage and I haven't had the courage yet to do the disassembly required to do that and (b) exchanging files with a modern computer is a little inconvenient. I also have an eMate 300 with a 480x320 screen resolution. I did a lot of work on that machine-writing, newsletters, design work, etc. My first laptop was a PowerBook 180c with an 8.4" screen at 640x480 resolution. For writing, the only real consideration for screen size is what your eyes are comfortable with.
